Kevin Scott
Director of Guaranteed Income
Born in Washington, D.C., raised in Florida, and a longtime Gainesville resident, Kevin is driven by a deep commitment to social justice and community organizing. With over thirteen years in recovery, he draws on lived experience to confront and dismantle the systems that perpetuate cycles of incarceration and poverty.
A former Community Spring Fellow, he now leads Just Income, a guaranteed income program created by and for formerly incarcerated people that provides $800 a month for a year, no strings attached. Under his leadership, the program has served more than 150 participants, distributed over $1 million, and achieved dramatically lower reincarceration rates alongside significant improvements in financial stability, food security, employment, and well-being.
The Just Income model has become a national blueprint. Kevin has consulted with over 40 cities and organizations, regularly speaks at national conferences, and has been featured in numerous publications. He appears in the award-winning documentary “It's Basic” and helped elevate Community Spring’s work to become a top five finalist for the Justice Innovation Prize. He also co-created an award-winning e-learning platform used by educators and policymakers to understand the challenges of life after incarceration.
A relentless advocate for criminal justice reform, Kevin helped secure Florida’s first Fair Chance Hiring ordinance, free jail phone calls, reductions in fines and fees, and the end of unpaid prison labor contracts.
Kevin practices Zen meditation, loves soccer, plays drums, has visited every state except Hawaii, and is the proud father of one genius daughter and two idiot cats.
